Sudden hearing loss, also known as sudden deafness, is a condition in which there is a rapid and unexplained loss of hearing in one or both ears. Although it is a rare condition, its occurrence can be alarming and worrying for those who experience it.
In this article, we tell you about its causes, diagnosis and appropriate treatment to effectively address this condition.
What is sudden hearing loss?
Sudden hearing loss, also known as sudden deafness, is a condition characterised by a rapid loss of hearing in one or both ears, occurring without warning and without an apparent cause. Sometimes some signs of hearing loss can be seen, but sometimes not.
It may occur suddenly or over a short period of time (hours or days). The condition mainly affects adults between the ages of 30 and 60, and although the exact causes are not always clear, it is believed that a number of factors may contribute to the development of this condition. These include:
- Infections: Viral infections, such as those affecting the inner ear or respiratory tract, can damage sensory cells in the ear, leading to hearing loss.
- Physical trauma: Blows or head injuries, such as an accident or direct trauma to the ear, can damage the inner ear and cause sudden deafness.
- Neurological disorders: Some diseases that affect the nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis or tumours, can interfere with the nerve signals that transmit sound from the ear to the brain.
- Circulatory problems: Insufficient blood flow to the inner ear, due to circulatory disorders such as hypertension or vascular problems, can affect hearing.
- Autoimmune factors: Autoimmune diseases, such as lupus or Ménière’s disease, can cause inflammation in the inner ear, disrupting the hearing process.
- Stress or hormonal changes: In some cases, high levels of stress or hormonal imbalances have also been associated with the onset of sudden hearing loss.
Importantly, in many cases, the underlying cause is unknown, which makes the condition even more puzzling for patients.
Treatment and diagnosis of sudden deafness
If you experience sudden hearing loss, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional as soon as possible in order to prevent further hearing problems. Diagnosis of sudden deafness is mainly done through hearing tests such as audiometry, which measures hearing sensitivity at different frequencies. To confirm that it is a sensorineural hearing loss, other tests such as blood tests, MRI or balance tests can be performed.
Treatment for sudden deafness varies depending on the cause and the length of time since the onset of hearing loss. In some cases, recovery may occur spontaneously, especially if the loss is detected early. In other situations, treatment includes medication, therapies or, in rare cases, surgery.
Early diagnosis is critical, as early treatment can significantly increase the chances of recovering lost hearing.
