A short flight, a mild cold or even a change in altitude on the road can end with an uncomfortable feeling in the ears. In many cases it is not intense pain, but a constant pressure that makes the sound feel more muffled or less clear, as if the ear does not fully open. This usually appears suddenly and, although it is not always serious, it is still annoying in daily life.
The good news is that, in most situations, it can be relieved with simple measures without the need for immediate medical intervention.
Ear pressure
Ear pressure appears when the air in the middle ear does not balance correctly with the outside air. This happens through the Eustachian tube, a small channel that connects the ear with the back of the nose. When this channel is blocked or does not work properly, that feeling of a “closed” ear is produced.
The most common causes are usually colds, nasal congestion, allergies or mild infections. It is also frequent when travelling by plane, going up or down a mountain or diving, due to sudden changes in atmospheric pressure. In some cases, excess earwax or inflammation can also play a role. Although it is usually temporary, if it happens often or does not improve, it is advisable to check it.
Methods to relieve ear pressure in the ears
In most cases, pressure can be reduced with simple techniques that help open the Eustachian tube and restore ear balance.
Swallow saliva or yawn
Repeatedly swallowing or yawning helps activate the muscles that open the Eustachian tube. It is a basic but very effective method, especially during altitude changes such as flights or road trips. Chewing gum can also help keep this movement constant and make ear pressure relief easier.
Valsalva maneuver
It consists of pinching the nose, closing the mouth and gently blowing as if trying to push air through the nose. This creates slight internal pressure that can help unblock the ear. It is important to do it carefully and without too much force, as doing it too strongly may cause discomfort.
Inhale steam or hot showers
Steam helps reduce nasal congestion, which is often the main cause of ear pressure. A hot shower or inhaling steam can help open the airways and improve middle ear function. It is a simple and useful method when the cause is a cold.
Stay hydrated and chew gum
Drinking water frequently helps keep mucous membranes in good condition and supports the function of the Eustachian tube. Chewing gum or even eating something soft stimulates jaw movement, which can help naturally equalise pressure.
Nasal rinses or decongestion
When the cause is nasal congestion, rinses with saline solution can help clear the airways. In some cases, decongestants can also be used, always with caution. By reducing nasal inflammation, the ear usually opens gradually.
We care for hearing health
Ear pressure is usually temporary, but when it happens repeatedly or comes with hearing loss or constant discomfort, it is important to check it. Maintaining good hearing health means not ignoring these signs and visiting professionals when necessary.
