Feeling like your ears are “blocked” is very common: when we fly on a plane, drive up a mountain, or dive down into the sea, that feeling of pressure that doesn’t go away can be very uncomfortable. We immediately look for ways to “unclog” our ears and get back to feeling normal.
However, an important question may arise: is it dangerous to unclog your ears? Could the eardrum end up rupturing? In this article, we’ll tell you!
Can I rupture my eardrum when unclogging my ears?
The eardrum is a very thin and sensitive membrane inside the ear. Its function is to pick up sound and transmit it inward so that we can hear properly. Because it is so delicate, it’s normal to think that any strong pressure could damage it.
In most cases, it is not easy to rupture the eardrum just by trying to unclog your ears. Common maneuvers, such as yawning, swallowing saliva, or gently blowing with your nose pinched, do not usually cause injuries if the ear is healthy. The body is prepared to adapt to pressure changes naturally.
Even so, there are situations in which there could be some risk. If the ear is already weakened by an infection, a recent ear infection, a previous perforation, or inflammation, forcing too much can cause pain and even a small tear. This can also happen if a lot of pressure is applied suddenly or repeated several times in a rough way.
When the eardrum ruptures, the symptoms are usually clear: intense pain, sudden hearing loss, ringing, a feeling of fullness in the ear, or even fluid discharge. In many cases the tear is small and heals on its own, but it is always important to have it checked to avoid complications.
Unclogging an ear without rupturing the eardrum
When an ear becomes blocked, the most important thing is not to panic or force it. In many cases, the blockage is simply due to a change in pressure or a mild buildup of earwax, and it can be solved with simple and safe actions:
Soft, natural movements
Yawning, swallowing saliva, or chewing gum are simple actions that help balance the pressure in the ear. They don’t require effort and are often enough when the blockage is mild.
Blowing carefully
Pinching your nose and blowing very gently can help equalize pressure. The key is not to force it. If you feel pain, stop immediately. It’s not about pushing the air, but doing it slowly and just once.
Applying heat to the area
Placing a warm compress over the ear for a few minutes can relieve the feeling of pressure and help the ear unclog naturally. It’s a simple and risk-free method.
Showering with warm water
In some cases, the blockage is related to earwax. Letting warm water gently fall near the ear while you shower can help soften it. Afterwards, tilt your head so the water drains out on its own and dry only the outer part of the ear with a towel. Never try to clean the inside of the ear.
What you should never do
Avoid inserting cotton swabs, clips, hairpins, or any object into the ear. Besides not solving the problem, they can push the wax further in or cause irritation and small injuries. Forcing the ear is the easiest way to worsen the blockage or cause unnecessary pain.
