Otitis externa is an infection of the ear canal that is most common during the summer months, especially in people who are active in the water.
In this article we tell you everything you need to know about this infection. Stay to read the article to find out.
What is otitis externa?
Otitis externa is an inflammation or infection of the external auditory canal, the pathway leading from the ear to the eardrum. This can happen suddenly and last for a short time (acute otitis externa) or over a long period of time (chronic otitis externa).
Otitis externa can occur when water, sand, dirt or other debris enters the ear canal, but it can also be caused by scratching the ear, getting something stuck in the ear, or even by an allergic skin reaction.
The diagnosis of otitis externa is mainly based on the patient’s medical history and physical examination. During otoscopy, the physician may observe a red, swollen and sometimes discharging ear canal.
Symptoms to know if you have otitis
The most common symptoms of otitis externa include:
- Earache: This is usually intense and is accentuated by touching or moving the pinna, and may even radiate to the jaw or neck.
- Itching: Especially in the early stages or in cases of chronic inflammation, which can cause persistent discomfort.
- Oedema and redness: Swelling and redness of the ear canal, often accompanied by a local sensation of warmth.
- Otorrhoea: Discharge of fluid, which may be greenish or yellowish, from the affected ear, sometimes with a foul odour.
- Decreased hearing: Sensation of a blocked ear or temporary loss of hearing due to inflammation and accumulation of secretions.
In severe cases, fever may develop, indicating a more advanced infection requiring urgent medical attention.
Treatment to cure otitis externa
Treating this type of infection is simpler and more common than you might think. In order to cure this problem correctly, the treatments to follow are:
- Cleaning of the ear canal: Performed by a professional to remove debris and allow better action of topical medications.
- Antibiotic ear drops: Application of topical antibiotics, often combined with corticosteroids, to reduce inflammation and fight infection.
- Analgesics: Over-the-counter analgesics can be used to relieve pain.
- Avoid getting water in the ear: It is essential to keep the ear dry during treatment, avoiding swimming or submerging the head.
- Do not use your hearing aid if you have otitis, as for it to heal properly, the ear needs to be ventilated.
In severe cases or when there is no improvement with initial treatment, oral antibiotics and a medical re-evaluation may be necessary to rule out complications.
Prevention of otitis externa involves preventing water from entering the ears, drying the ears thoroughly after water activities and avoiding the introduction of objects into the ear canal that could injure it.
